RSA Remote: Navigating Choppy Waters – Key Legal Issues Faculty Need to Know

October 24, 2025 @ 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Please join us for this upcoming RSA Remote, a webinar with Dr. Kent Kauffman, author of Navigating Choppy Waters: Key Legal Issues Faculty Need to Know (Bloomsbury 2024). Click here to find the publisher’s page.

You can register for the Zoom meeting here.

Stemming from last spring’s RSA Town Hall WTF (When Talking Fulfills), RSA is dedicated to helping members respond to and hopefully counter political attacks, misinformation, and other threats in an increasingly dangerous climate both on and off campus. We want to heed the call from that Town Hall regarding “The need to shift pedagogy to rethink democratic skills and rhetoric skills go hand in hand with democratic skills.”

While the law seems increasingly capricious, we still feel one avenue is awareness of legal issues and faculty rights. Please join Professor Kauffman as he discusses

* employment protection, tenure matters and the law (U.S.)

* your Syllabus and Contract Law

* Academic Freedom and First Amendment Cases.

The presentation will last about 40 minutes with about 20 minutes for Q&A. Note: Although he is a lawyer, neither Kent Kauffman nor RSA can give legal advice. This is an informational session on academic case law in the United States so you can be aware of your rights. Drs. David M. Grant and Rebecca Dingo will moderate the discussion.

This webinar is brought to you by the RSA WTF Working Group: Kris Ratcliffe, Kendall Gerdes, Ryan Skinnell, Elizabethada Wright, Joshua Miller, and Kerry Smith, members.

For access information, please register here no later than 9:00 am ET on Friday, October 24.

We hope you can join this important conversation.
