NEW! Applications Re-Open to the May 2023 RSA Institute: Some Workshops Are Again Available!

Dear Colleagues,

A number of RSA Institute workshops still have some room (thanks to the generosity of many workshop leaders), therefore we are now reopening registration to late applications—by February 1. If you were unable to apply for the Institute last fall, for whatever reason, but now would like a second chance to participate, read on. (And by all means, feel free to forward this announcement to interested faculty and graduate students!)

As you probably recall, the rhetoric faculty and graduate students at Pennsylvania State University, University Park, in cooperation with its Center for Democratic Deliberation, has invited faculty and graduate students to participate in the 10^th Biennial RSA Summer Institute in May. The nine week-long Institute seminars are completely filled and are no longer available to applicants, but spaces remain (often only a few spaces, however) in a number of weekend workshops, held Thursday, May 25 to Saturday, May 27. 

These workshops promise exciting intellectual opportunities for graduate students and faculty, and the Institute will feature many opportunities for networking, for exchanges with colleagues over food and drink, and for just plain fun.

If you decide to make a late application (by February 1) to a workshop, you can list first, second, and third preferences as you wish in your application by going to THIS PAGE (you may need to create an Oxford Abstracts account). Workshop leaders will accept participants by February 10, and you will be notified immediately thereafter by email. Registration must be completed, and fees paid, by April 1.

Reminders: We are excited to return to the matchless vitality of in-person Institute sessions and the other benefits of in-person participation; but we are also deeply committed to accessibility, especially since the current moment presents real challenges, including the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, reductions in financial support available to graduate students and faculty, and inflated travel expenses. We also recognize that personal circumstances can make in-person participation difficult for some RSA members. Therefore, 

• The leaders of many workshops have agreed to accept some remote participants in their sessions. (A few workshops are unsuited to remote participation because of the nature of their offerings; the availability of remote participation is noted on the website and in the application.)
• Institute tuition rates are substantially reduced across the board.
• The Institute budget includes provisions for increased financial support for participants.
• Multiple social events are provided during the Institute–coffee breaks each morning and afternoon, receptions for participants, and the Institute luncheon on Thursday. The Institute schedule is posted on the web site.
• Affordable housing will be available in three comfortable downtown hotels adjacent to campus, a short stroll from Institute venues.
• The Institute Keynote Address (by Anjali Vats) as well as several online webinars will be made available for free to all RSA members.
